Every member of the Indian Lake Local Schools staff is now better prepared to take down an active shooter or other threat. 
More than 200 employees from all across the district took part in ALICE training on Friday, August 18th at Indian Lake High School. ALICE stands for Alert, Locate, Inform, Counter and Evacuate.
Washington Township Police Chief Rick Core told staff “You either engage to protect your classroom or you don’t.… If it (an active shooter event) happens, I want you to go down swinging!”
Chief Core shared some of the insights local law enforcement learned from the school shooting at West Liberty-Salem earlier this year. He also demonstrated some simple self-defense techniques and strategies to disarm or fight off an attacker. 
After the large group session, staff members split into smaller groups and were able to react to a series of staged attacks in classrooms. Staff were also trained on how to engage the district’s new door barricade system. 
The interactive inservice was coordinated by the Washington Township Police Department and included aide from the Russells Point Police Department, Indian Joint Fire District and the Indian Lake EMA. Indian Lake has been an ALICE school since 2010. Our district also continually revises our Emergency Operations Plan, alert notification system, and facilities.
