Indian Lake Schools will use local mental health grant money to implement a new program to reduce stress and to supplement a long-standing positive behavior program in the upper grade levels.
The Mary Rutan Health Center Foundation recently presented their 2022 Wellness Grant monetary awards, which total more than $50,800, to several local schools and agencies. MRH Foundation Chief Operating Officer Tammy Allison explains that a recent survey shows the need for additional mental health supports in our community. She says that the number of adults attempting suicide has doubled over the last few years and that 21% of Logan County students in grades 8-12 have attempted suicide at least once.
The Indian Lake High School Key Club received a grant worth $2,500 to cover the adoption fee and needed supplies for an emotional support dog. Club Advisory Jenifer Ignarski and club members are working closely with 4 Paws 4 Ability to foster a dog at the high school as soon as possible. ILHS Key Club President and senior Regan Ross explains.
"I believe that having this dog at our school will help decrease anxiety and depression levels for our students, staff and administrators, boost morale at our school and create a more positive outlook about attending school in general."
In addition, the Indian Lake Middle School and High School each received $2,500 grants to continue PBIS (Positive Behavior Incentives and Supports) efforts. The Lake Effect program includes several prongs, including Laker/PBIS Cards that students earn with positive behaviors. They can spend those cards at the periodic Laker Store and win other prizes at the end of each semester.
The amount of grant money that Indian Lake Schools received from the Mary Rutan Health Foundation in this round totaled $7,500.
