Indian Lake High School students are getting the opportunity to experience the world-class engineering and manufacturing that takes place right down the road from school. Approximately 80 ILHS Juniors and Seniors recently visited Honda Transmission Manufacturing in Russells Point on World Manufacturing Day. The young people were able to tour the massive plant that employs more than 1400 people.

The event is an ongoing effort on the part of Honda to prepare and recruit skilled workers that will be needed over the next decade. Honda HTM Supply Chain Department Manager Joe Berner says, “This experience lets students see what Honda’s all about so they can make an educated decision about future possibilities.”

During the tour, associates talked with students about the skills necessary to work in each department, including training in robotics, electronics, tooling and engineering. Before leaving, students were able to meet with representatives from several area colleges and two-year institutions to discuss what programs are available to obtain the training needed for a job at Honda or similar manufacturers.

ILHS Senior Michael Anderson said tour was beneficial, “The experience was pretty neat. I helped me decide that I do want to go into computer programming and plan for my future.”
