Indian Lake High School students got a stark reminder to make driving safely their top priority this prom and graduation season.

The ILHS Students Against Destructive Decisions club members recently acted out a mock accident for the entire student body in the parking lot just outside of the auditorium.

In the staged scenario, student MaryAnn Wahl (senior) ran a red light after drinking alcohol at a party. Her vehicle t-boned a car driven by Belle Elliott (junior) with passenger Tatum Reprogle (senior). Wahl’s passenger, Logan Jakeway (junior) was ejected from the car and died at the scene. Elliott had minor injuries and was transported by ambulance. Reprogle suffered severe brain trauma and was CareFlighted from the accident. Wahl was not injured, but was arrested for impairment at the scene.

Reprogle says they were told to act frightened, but the mock crash impacted her more than she expected.

“We weren’t told to cry, but me and Belle together, cried full tears. And we just wanted them to come quicker. I kept thinking when are they going to get here, when are they going to get here? It was just scary and we were’t even hurt, but just being in there and stuck,” Reprogle recalls.

Indian Lake High School Class of 2003 graduate and current CareFlight Flight Nurse Jessica Oakley helped organize the event for her alma mater. Oakley was impacted by an auto accident as a freshman, and it set her on the course to become a trauma nurse. She reminded students during the presentation, “Accidents happen in the blink of an eye. And everybody thinks I can just check this text or I can just look real quick and not pay attention for just a second. Just that quickly it happens and whether it be texting and driving, drinking and driving or speeding while driving, as we recently saw, it can impact you for the rest of your life.”

Emergency responders from Washington Township Police, Indian Lake EMS, Russells Point Police, the Ohio Highway Patrol, Indian Joint Fire District, and CareFlight from Miami Valley Hospital assisted in the mock accident, along with Shoffstall Funeral Home and Shafer’s Towing.

Indian Lake High School’s Prom is Saturday.
