Indian Lake Key Club members got a special treat from the company that operates Meals on Wheels locally.
A total of 24 senior club members rotated delivering meals to residents in Huntsville, Lakeview, Lewistown and Russells Point every Friday all school year. The group attended the LifeCare Alliance Volunteer Recognition Luncheon recently at the Hillier YMCA where the ILHS Key Club was presented with the School Spirit Award.
Club President Hanna Hogue spoke at the event saying the project has had a huge impact on her and her classmates, "It's been a great opportunity to get a glimpse into the community because you might not realize people are living in those situations where they need your help."
Last spring, ILHS Key Club advisor Jen Ignarski answered the call from the United Way of Logan County to help deliver Meals on Wheels in the Indian Lake area. Ignarski, Hogue and ILHS staff member Lisa McGatha began making deliveries over the summer, then added in the rest of the club's senior members when school started.
Ignarski says Key Club will continue its partnership with Meals and Wheels into the future. Hogue says she hopes to deliver meals even when she enters college next fall.
LifeCare Alliance representatives report that each volunteer delivery route saves their organization $12,000 annually. Furthermore, each person who is able to stay at home because of Meals on Wheels, instead of moving to a nursing home, saves the government an estimated $62,00 annually in medical costs.
